Blood doesn't just make her who she is... it also makes her what she is.

Like being a 16-year-old vampire isn't hard enough, Tessa's throwback human genes make her an outcast among her relatives. But try as she might, she can't get a handle on the vampire lifestyle and all the... blood.

Turning her back on the vamp world, she embraces the human teenage lifestyle - high school, peer pressure, and finding a boyfriend. Jared manages to stir something in her blood. He's smart and fun and oh, so cute. But Tessa's dream of a having the perfect boyfriend turns into a nightmare when vampires attack the movie theater and kidnap her date.

Once again, Tessa finds herself torn between the human world and the vampire one. Will blood own out? Can she make peace with who she is - as well as what?

Warning This book contains some swearing.

Vampire in Denial Family Blood Ties Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Dale Mayer JR Lowe The Killion Group Books

I got this book as a free kindle download. I liked the premise as I am a pretty avid reader of urban fantasy/paranormal romance and various other subgenres of that sort. Basically, if there is a vampire or a werewolf involved I'm generally down to read it (witches aren't really my thing though, strangely enough), but I digress.

The elements I enjoyed in the story: (1)the characters: the outcast out to prove herself and save her friends, the charming and helpful yet occasionally condescending friend-of-older-brother love interest, and the wide-eyed slightly naive yet willing to answer the call to arms also love interest (it seems now a days girls always need at least 2 options) (2) the storyline: save the humans from conspiracy of vampire rule.

Overall, the story is good. I did enjoy it and read through it rather quickly. The matters that detract from the story are as follows 1) the writing: slightly disjointed at times, bounces around to the point where you have to go back and reread to understand how you got to the point of the story you are on right now 2)the actions of some of the characters to plot obstacles, maybe I'm just used to vampire characters that know how to fight/be in battle etc but these characters seem to fumble around a lot and either stumble upon a solution or just continuously get kidnapped.

This looks to be what will become a long run series (I believe it's on its fourth book) and tends to end in cliff-hangers.

Vampire in Denial Family Blood Ties Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Dale Mayer JR Lowe The Killion Group Books Reviews

This is YA done right. Sure there is the occasional rogue grammar error and minor inconsistency, but the overall flow and style keeps the reader engaged and anticipatory over the course of the entire story.
The story is engaging and well put together. There is an excellent blend of the normal teenage angst with supernatural teenage angst and the balance is great.
The way young vampires are depicted in this tale is a refreshing way to fluff up a common story and make it fresh for the reader. There are enough similarities to make vampire fans happy and the differences are enough to spruce up the way we think of the common vampire without resorting to a generous coating of stripper dust.
The maturity level of dialogue in the story is relatable to the target audience along with the everyday problems of a socially awkward teenager that doesn't quite fit in. The frank underlying message of finding your inner strength lends a respectable quality to this book that is a rare find in the Young Adult genre. The language and descriptions were reasonable and realistic and the settings are well described and easy to visualize.
As with most initial books of a series this story does end on a serious cliffhanger that all but forces you to run out and grab the next book of the series, but I see no reason why it wouldn't be worth it.
I really was enjoying reading this book until the last page. There is nothing I hate worse than a cliff hanger. Even if a book is to be part of a series, it and all the books in the series should stand alone. I like to have a warm fuzzy when I finish a book. If the book is good enough then the author doesn't have to make it a cliffhanger to try to get you to buy the other books in the series. I never buy other books in a series once I discover that they are cliffhangers.
Vampire in Denial is the first book in a long line of books in the Family Blood Ties series. It looks like the entire series is about Tessa, half-human, half-vampire.

Tessa wants to be like any other 16 year old girl . . . human. Since she is a different breed, she feels like a freak. Her vampire friends and family refer to her as being retarded and by her human friends, say she’s “different”. She feels like she doesn’t fit in either world, but walks in both.

Since Tessa is half and half, she can walk in the day light and eat food like humans. She also has some characteristics of her vampire half. She drinks blood, although, less amounts. She has fangs that are smaller than normal. Tessa is taller than the average human girl, and skinny, with waist length jet black hair.

One night she is out with her human friends watching a movie when the worst of the worst happens, they get attacked. She was knocked unconscious while her friend was taken. Since the vampire treaty no vampire is supposed to attack humans. This is bad! At home, she tells her family of what happened in hopes they will help. They go to counsel, but she isn’t aloud to go to as she is not a full vampire. Her family informs council on her behalf.
No one is willing to help, so Tessa decides to handle things herself, and she is ok with that.

During her adventure to rescue her friend she gains an unlikely accomplice, and finds horrors that no one had seen in 50 plus years. While Tessa is out, her family rallies together. When she gets hurt they finally have proof of what they think is really going on.

Can she find her friend? Does her family completely believe her? WOW, can she do that, she couldn’t do that before? All this and more…

The loss of the one star is because I found grammatical errors, although they could have been the meat grinder from . This book was left at a horrific cliffhanger, so I did get the next couple of books to see what happened to Tessa.

I received Vampire in Denial (Book 1 of the Family Blood Ties) during a free promotion.
