An antiquated but fun tale of young lads on the playing fields of Yale c. 1900. Low-quality transfer, some OCR errors and no illustrations - although for some reason the captions remain.
It was of interest to me because I had attended Lawrenceville years ago and there was a similar story of Stover's experiences there before Yale. I wouldn't think the book would be of much current interest to the general public.
Surprisingly modern in its criticism of social elitism and its vision of the university as shaper of brave and thoughtful young leaders. Also just a good yarn.
This is an iconic period piece. it recreates the atmosphere, slang and manly emotions of the day, at least as Owen Johnson recalled and saw them. Feels pretty dated now.
Somewhat predictable and not quite literary. Heavy-handed and melodramatic in a number of places, and the title character is not the most interesting... But it handles matters of continuing cultural weight and speaks to possibly irresolvable problems that persist in a de facto caste-ridden society and articulates them well
Quaint. Very well written in its style. Story about a character with character. Americana at its best. three more words.
